The LGBT Community Center belongs to all of us

Cleveland-Your LGBT Community Center helps support isolated elders, struggling youth and young adults, and any of our community members in need of a nonjudgmental place to find community and get support or referrals. Serving more than 1,500 individuals and families monthly, the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland belongs to all of us.

As the weather warms up, it is easy to get so wrapped up in the fun activities of the season that we may forget how much easier it is to live our lives, thanks to the work of the Center. The work of the Center does not get a spring break or a summer vacation. All year round it is providing support, service and advocacy to and for the various LGBT

communities throughout the area, as it has since 1975. Much has changed since then and the Center continues to change to meet new challenges and ongoing needs in new innovative ways.

Just as the caterpillar needs time in the cocoon before it can emerge as a beautiful butterfly, so has the LGBT Community Center needed the past year to grow and change inside, in order to emerge stronger and ready to serve our broad range of individuals and families within the LGBTQQASI and same-gender-loving communities. Yes, it's not just LGBT anymore-it never really was just gay, or just lesbian. It doesn't matter if you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, ally,

straight, intersex-or any other identity that may be included as a sexual or gender minority-we all belong.

Meeting the needs of our various LGBT communities is a challenge, one we welcome and embrace. And it is an opportunity for all of us to demonstrate our solidarity on the issues that affect our community. We have to work together to move forward.

The Center recently completed a strategic plan that will guide our growth through 2015. Last month we launched a new volunteerism program, with more than 20 different volunteer opportunities. Your community needs you to get and remain involved, now more than ever. The Center is recruiting 100 volunteers to help us move

forward; you can apply to be a volunteer online at LGBTcleveland.org.

The Center is in the middle of our summer fund drive; you can donate online at www.LGBTcleveland.org. The Center produces a weekly newsletter of happenings in our community; you can sign up for it at www.LGBTcleveland.org. See a pattern here? Get yourself recentered today at LGBTcleveland.org and come see us at 6600 Detroit Avenue, in the heart of Cleveland's Gordon Square Arts District.

Jan Cline is the executive director of the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland.

Windsong joins Men's Chorus for 'Friends' concert

Cleveland-Have you gotten your tickets yet for "Friends to the End this weekend?" It is hard to believe that the final concert of North Coast Men's Chorus' 23rd season is almost here and gone. I really hope that you'll attend this concert, because we have some great music for you.

You'll hear some great classics like "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Lean on Me," songs about friendship from the Broadway stage including "Bosom Buddies," "Side by Side by Side" and "I Will Never Leave You," and, of course, we've tossed in Lady Gaga's "Born This Way!" This concert features several of your favorite Chorus soloists and a fun assortment of dance numbers.

We're pleased that Windsong, Cleveland's Feminist Chorus, will be our special guests for this concert and we have a few other guests that will also be sharing their talents. All in all, it is going to a wonderful way for us to spend some time you our friends!

"Friends to the End" will be performed on Saturday, June 18 at 8 pm and Sunday, June 19 at 3 pm in Waetjen Auditorium, inside the Music & Communications Building at Cleveland State University, 2001 Euclid Avenue.

That ain't Shakespeare

Don't miss our next big fundraiser show

at the end of July. About 100 of you had a side-splitting, laugh-filled evening of murderous mayhem last year at our murdermystery fund raiser. And we've got another one planned for this year. We were lucky enough to get the same cast of actors together, and you won't believe what they came up with for this year's show.

The setting is Piccadilly High School in Middletown, Oklahoma, where the town residents are auditioning for Shakespeare's Macbeth. Meet Audrey Audette, the glamorous New York actress; Mercedes Merriweather, the town librarian and spinster; Sam Smithers, trustworthy custodian at the school; Norman P. Nutcracker, the town deputy; Beef Burleson, the former high school quarterback, and Crystal Collins,

the cute clerk down at the Piggly Wiggly. Lots of fun and intrigue will be a part of the evening along with a prize for the person who correctly guesses whodunit.

Tickets are already selling for this funfilled evening that includes dinner, the show, silent auction and reverse raffle and some great cocktails at our cash bar. That Ain't Shakespeare will take place on July 30 at 6 pm at Brennan's Party Center, 13000 Triskett Rd. in Cleveland. Tickets are $40, and a table of eight is only $280.

For more information go to www.ncm chorus.org or call 216-556-0590.

Rich Cole is the artistic director of the North Coast Men's Chorus.
